The entrance is level with a secure heavy door. However, there is step-free access to a level entrance with a secure powered door in the connected Oxford Molecular Pathology Institute

There is lift access to all floors, an accessible toilet on the ground floor and further accessible toilets available in the Oxford Molecular Pathology Institute. There is lift access to the pathology café and library on the first floor. 

Both staircases have handrails both side and contrasting markings on the step edges. One staircase has open risers. There are no hearing support systems in the building.

There is one designated parking space for Blue Badge Holders. There is transfer space to one side of this space only. The parking space is close to the level entrance into the connected Oxford Molecular Pathology Institute . This space must be booked in advance - please contact the department to arrange this. If this space is in use it may be possible to arrange another (standard) space.

There is step free access to the level entrance. This is a secure manually operated door with a proximity card reader 100 cm from floor level. The door is heavy. 

Alternatively you can use the Oxford Molecular Pathology Institute entrance which has a powered door. This is a secure entrance opened with a proximity card or by using the intercom to contact reception staff. The card reader is 84 cm from floor level; the intercom push button is 96 cm from floor level. The entrance door is powered and has a clear width of 95cm. Once inside, there is another door which is also powered and has a clear width of 90 cm. This takes you into a lobby area where there is lift or stepped access up to the first floor of Oxford Molecular Pathology Institute as well as a powered door into the connected EPA Building and Sir William Dunn School of Pathology

New visitors with disabilities are advised to contact the department in advance; staff will be happy to assist and ensure visitors are aware of all accessible features of the building.

The department has one reception which is at the entrance to the Sir William Dunn School of Pathology Building. There is stepped access only to the reception desk. However, there is step-free access to the reception office from the Oxford Molecular Pathology Institute and the EPA Building. In addition, the intercom outside the level entrance is linked to reception.

Standard toilets
There are male and female toilets on the ground floor. In addition there are non-gendered toilets on all floors of the connected Oxford Molecular Pathology Institute. 

Accessible toilets
There is an accessible toilet on the ground floor. There are drop down rails on the transfer side and fixed rails on the other side. There is a lever flush which may be set too high up for some people to reach. There is a pull cord alarm and a reset button both within reach from the toilet. There is a fixed vertical rail on the right hand side of the sink only (as you are looking at it). There is very little contrast between the rails, walls, sink and toilet. 

In addition there are accessible toilets on all floors of the connected Oxford Molecular Pathology Institute

There is a lift to all floors of the building. The lift call buttons are 1.1 m from floor level. The doors have a clear width of 90 cm. The lift dimensions are 1.1 m x 2.1 m. The lift controls are in the range 108 cm to 113 cm from floor level; the buttons are not tactile. There is no handrail. There is no mirror. There is a visual floor indicator but no audible announcer.

There is a larger lift in the connected Oxford Molecular Pathology Institute.

There are two staircases in the building. Both go to all floors of the building. 

Main stairs
These have open risers. There are contrasting markings on the treads only. There are handrails both sides of the stairs. 

 Secondary stairs
There are contrasting markings on the step edges. There are handrails on both sides of the stairs.

Main entrance
Level entrance. Manual heavy double doors - each leaf has a clear width of 96 cm. 

Level entrance via connected Oxford Molecular Pathology Institute
Secure entrance. Proximity card reader 84cm from floor level, push button intercom 96 cm from floor level. Powered door with clear width of 95 cm. Inside there is an entrance lobby with another powered door with a clear width of 90cm. From here there are powered double doors into the connected Sir William Dunn School of Pathology Building and EPA Building. Both door leaves open with a push button and give a clear width of 1 m. 

Other doors

All doors in the building have a clear width of at least 80cm. 

Doors in corridors are generally held open to enable good movement around the building. 

The library door is glass and has only minimal contrasting marking making it difficult to identify especially in bright sunlight. The library door is also very heavy.

The Pathology Library is on the first floor of the EPA Building. 

The door is glass, very heavy and has only very minimal contrasting marking. Some people may struggle to identify the door especially in bright sunlight. 

The library is not staffed. There is a small collection of books on floor to ceiling shelves. 

Desks are fixed with movable chairs. Some wheelchair users may find they are unable to fit under the desks which are at 67 cm from floor level. The desk surface height is 72 cm from floor level. There are no height adjustable desks in the library. 

There is a small seating area with chairs and a low coffee table. 

There are some rugs on the floor throughout the library. 

There is a large window along one side of the library which may cause glare in some lighting conditions.

There is a large seminar room on the second floor. Unfortunately the access auditor was not able to visit this room so there are no further details available at present. 

 

The Pathology café and common room is on the first floor. There is step free access from The William Dunn School of Pathology Building, Oxford Molecular Pathology Institute and the EPA Building. 

There is hot and cold food available. The cafe is self-service. Some of the items in the fridge and the hot food counter may be out of reach for many wheelchair users - cafe staff are happy to help and will provide items on request. The hot food counter is 95 cm from floor level. 

Tables and chairs are not fixed and can be moved if needed. Some wheelchair users may find they are unable to fit under the small round tables which are 68 cm from floor level. There are longer tables which have a bar underneath at 64 cm from floor level meaning that some wheelchair users are unable to fit underneath. 

There is stepped and step-free access to the common room which can be used as an eating area. There are more cafe style tables and chairs here, as well as some armchairs and lower coffee tables. 

There are floor to ceiling windows along one side of the café and the common room which could cause glare in certain lighting conditions.
