There are no designated accessible parking spaces at Trinity. There is parking near the St Giles entrance and also on Front Quad.

Parking is agreed on a case by case basis. Students with specific parking needs should discuss these with the College before their arrival.

The main entrance is on Broad Street. This entrance is level. There is an alternative stepped entrance on Parks Road. The pedestrian entrance from St Giles is through a cut-out gate which has a threshold.

Main entrance

  • The pedestrian gate is held open during the day
  • This gate opens to 820 mm
  • The access control for this gate is 135 cm from the ground
  • There is a second gate between the pedestrian entrance and Front Quad 
  • This gate opens to over 90 cm
  • The access controls for this gate are 92 cm and 126 cm from the ground

St Giles

  • The pedestrian entrance here is through a cutout gate 
  • This gate has a threshold which is 37 cm high
  • The cutout gate opens to 55 cm 
  • The access controls are 143 cm and 144 cm from the floor

Parks Road

  • This entrance can only be reached by using steps
  • This gate was not in use at the time of the audit due to building work 

Vehicle Entrances 

  • The vehicle entrance on St Giles is opened by using the intercom
  • The vehicle entrance into Front Quad is opened by the Porters

Lodge

  • There is a mixture of level and sloped access from the main entrance
  • The slope is 90 cm wide.
  • The lodge door is opens to 69 cm
  • There is a short gentle slope from the doorway into the Lodge
  • The Porters are happy to come out of the Lodge to assist people
  • There is also a window near the pedestrian entrance which is used as a counter
  • This window is 83 cm from the floor
  • The counter inside the Lodge is 126 cm from the floor
  • There is space to manoeuvre a wheelchair in the Lodge
  • The porters are on duty 24 hours a day

Pigeonholes

  • There are pigeonholes at varying heights 
  • If anyone is unable to access the pigeonholes the porters will hold onto their post

Trinity has 7 accessible toilets, and 1 Changing Places toilet. As the toilets were built at different times they do not all meet current accessibility standards. Some of them do not have features such as high contrast between the rails and the walls, easy-to-use door handles and easy reach sinks.

Library – Platform Lift

  • The lift car has a handrail underneath the buttons

Levine Building

Auditorium – Passenger Lift

  • This passenger lift gives access to all floors in the building

As you would expect Trinity College has buildings of various different ages and therefore a variety of different doors.
There are powered doors in the following locations:

  • Doors from Café lobby to lift
  • Levine building first floor doors from stairwell to accommodation area
  • Levine building first floor kitchen
  • Levine building first floor door between rooms 1 and 21 and the kitchen

Some of the doors in the College are heavy and some people may need assistance. Some of the doors have door knobs and some are opened by using keys.

Front Quad

  • Access to Porters’ Lodge, JCR, MCR, President’s Lodgings and accommodation
  • There is level access around the Quad
  • The surface is a mixture of paving and tarmac
  • There is level access into Durham Quad, Library Quad and the Small Quad
  • There is level access into the Gardens
  • The grass here is surrounded by a metal upstand

Library Quad

  • Access to library and accommodation
  • There is a mix of sloped and stepped access to this Quad
  • The surface is paved

Small Quad

  • Access to accommodation including accessible bedrooms, MCR, JCR kitchen
  • Level access around the edge of the Quad only
  • Access to the centre of the Quad is stepped only

Durham Quad

  • Access to Chapel, Dining Hall, Bar, accommodation
  • There is level access around the Quad
  • The surface is a mix of paving and bricks
  • There is a small step (4cm high), and a short very steep ramp

Garden Quad

  • Access to Fletcher Seminar Room and accommodation
  • The access from Durham Quad has a small step (4cm high) and a short very steep ramp
  • There is level access around the Quad
  • The surface is a mix of paving and bricks
  • There is stepped access to Dolphin Yard
  • There is level access to the Gardens from Garden Quad

Dolphin Yard

  • Access to gym, and accommodation
  • There is a mixture of level and ramped access from Garden Quad
  • Access from St Giles is through the cut-out gate which has a step

Access

The librarians are happy to retrieve books for anyone unable to access the library

Reception

  • The powered doors from the Levine building into reception open to 125 cm
  • The push button for this door is 110 cm from the floor
  • The powered double doors from Library Quad have a combined opening of 156 cm
  • The access control is 92 cm from the floor and the exit push button is 117 cm from the floor
  • The reception desk window is 95 cm from the floor 
  • The book return desk is 79 cm from the floor
  • The bottom of the touch screen is 120 cm from the floor
  • There is room to manoeuvre a wheelchair in this space

Lower Library

  • There is a gentle slope from the platform lift to the door of the Lower Library 
  • The Lower Library door is powered
  • This door opens to 84 cm
  • The access control is 115 cm from the floor
  • The exit push button is 116 cm from the floor
  • The underside of the tables is 72 cm from the floor
  • The narrowest sections of the passageway in this room are 130 cm 
  • There is space to manoeuvre a wheelchair
  • 2 height adjustable desks available

Upper Library

  • The double doors between the platform lift and the Upper Library are held open
  • These doors have a combined clear width of 149 cm
  • The access control is 104 cm high
  • The original inner doors are held open
  • The underside of the tables is 73 cm from the floor
  • There is space to manoeuvre a wheelchair in this room
  • Height adjustable desk available

Sutro Room

  • This room is reached either by using stairs or the platform lift in the Library Quad
  • The door opens to 92 cm
  • The door is unlocked with a key which is 101 cm from the floor 
  • The doorknob is 117 cm from the floor 
  • The platform lift opens directly into the room 
  • The underside of the tables is 64 cm from the floor

Levine Building Teaching Rooms

  • The teaching rooms are all on the ground floor
  • There is level access from opposite the Garden room
  • The corridor doors from the lobby open to 85 cm
  • These doors will stay open
  • All of the teaching room doors open to 85 cm
  • All of the doors will stay open
  • The tops of the tables in these teaching rooms are 72 cm from the floor
  • The underside of the tables is 65 cm from the floor 
  • There is space to manoeuvre a wheelchair in these rooms and along the corridor

Levine Building Garden Room

  • The double doors to this room are powered
  • They have a combined effective clear width of 130 cm
  • The access control is 100 cm from the floor
  • The exit push button is 116 cm from the floor
  • The inner double doors open to 87 cm each
  • There is space to manoeuvre a wheelchair in this room

The Fletcher room can only be reached by using stairs.

  • There are two sets of double doors from the foyer into the auditorium

Basement level 

  • The doors closest to the lift open to 80 cm each
  • The route to the stage from the lift is through two doors
  • The corridor door opens to 85 cm
  • The door to the stage opens to 80 cm
  • There are wheelchair spaces at the front on this level

Green Room / Dressing Rooms / Music Rooms

  • These rooms can only be reached by using the lift or stairs
  • The room doors all open to 87 cm
  • Some of these rooms have a limited amount of space to accommodate a wheelchair

Dining Hall

  • There is level entry into the building

  • The dining hall has two sets of double doors

Servery

  • The main door to the servery opens to 71 cm
  • This door pop is kept open during mealtimes

  • The servery is 136 cm wide 
  • The double doors into the Hall each open to 50 cm
  • These doors will stay open
  • The payment counter is 86 cm from the floor
  • Staff are happy to assist anyone having difficulty accessing the servery

Both doors from the Quad into the MCR have a step and thresholds or upstands.
Main Door

  • The main door has three upstands which are between 1.5 cm and 3 cm high 
  • This door is unlocked using a keypad 
  • The door opens to 89 cm

Kitchen Door

  • The door into the kitchen from the Quad has a step which is 3 cm high
  • There is an upstand which is 2 cm high 
  • This door opens to 74 cm

Sitting Room
The sitting room can only be reached by using stairs.

Ground Floor

  • The door to the dining room and kitchen opens to 90 cm 
  • The access control and exit push button are 114 cm from the floor
  • There is a 3 cm threshold which is rounded

Kitchen

  • The entrances to the kitchen are 73 cm and 77 cm wide
  • The countertops and the island are 90 cm from the floor
  • The widest gap between the island and the wall units is 80 cm
  • The narrowest gap is 63 cm
  • There is limited room for manoeuvre in the kitchen

Dining Room

  • The underside of the dining room table is 62 cm from the floor
  • The top of the table is 72 cm from the floor
  • There is limited space to manoeuvre a wheelchair in this room 

MCR

  • The door to this room has an effective clear width of 87 cm

Staircase 6

  • The building door is powered
  • There is a gentle slope up to the bedroom
  • The bedroom door opens to 88 cm
  • The lock is 126 cm from floor
  • The underside of the desk is 69 cm from floor
  • The bathroom measures 163 cm x 218 cm

Levine Building

  • The building door is powered
  • All of the accessible bedrooms are reached by using the lift
  • The lobby and corridor door between bedrooms 1 and 21 and the lift are powered
  • The bedroom doors open to 86 cm
  • The access control is between 101 cm and 110 cm on these doors
  • The undersides of the desks are 67 cm from the floor
