There is one designated accessible Blue Badge parking space available. This is located next to the ramp leading to the entrance door. The parking space is next to cycle parking which may impact on transfer space at busy times. 

This space must be booked in advance. Please contact the department directly to book this space.

There is stepped and ramped access to the entrance. 

The ramp starts next to the Blue Badge parking space and is in three sections with a level landing between each section. There is cycle parking alongside the first section of the ramp which can make the right angle turn to the second section of the ramp a little tight. The final two sections of the ramp have a handrail to the left side (ascending). 

There are short flights of stairs with level landings in between. There are no contrasting markings on the step edges. Only two sections of steps have handrails to one side only. 

There is a level area at the top of the stairs and ramp in front of the entrance doors - some parts of this are a little uneven. The entrance doors are manual and heavy; and each leaf has a clear width of only 55 cm. The doors are secure with a swipe card reader at 139 cm from floor level. There is also an intercom to reception set at 125 cm from floor level.

There is a large entrance lobby with a reception desk to the left as you enter the building. The majority of the reception desk is 106 cm from floor level. There is a smaller section of the reception desk at 80 cm from floor level - there is no knee recess. 

There is a waiting area next to the reception desk. There are four chairs with back rests but no arm rests. 

There is a fixed induction loop at the reception desk.

There are standard male and female toilets on all floors of the building. There are no gender neutral toilets. 

There is an accessible toilet on the ground, first, second and third floors.  These are all located in a central location off the stair/lift lobby. Please see below for information about the accessible toilets:

  • The door has a clear width of at least 80 cm
  • The door opens inwards but can be opened outwards in the event of an emergency
  • There is no horizontal grab rail on the door (but there is a vertical handle
  • The dimensions are 160 cm x 220 cm
  • The door is locked by a lever lock
  • The lights switch on automatically
  • The toilet seat is the recommended 48 cm from floor level
  • The toilet cistern can be used as a back rest
  • The flush is a spatula type lever and is on the transfer side of the toilet.
  • As you face the toilet the transfer space is to the right
  • There is a dropdown rail on the transfer side. There are wall mounted grab rails
  • The sink has vertical grab rails either side
  • There is good visual contrast between the walls and the handrails and other fixtures
  • There is a full height mirror on the wall to the side of the toilet
  • There is an emergency alarm with the reset button within reach from the toilet
  • There are coat hooks at 100 cm from floor level

All floors have a central lobby area with access to the stairs and lift. The lift goes to all floors of the building.

  • The call buttons are in the range 94 cm to 101 cm from floor level
  • The lift car dimensions are 138 cm x100 cm
  • The lift doors have a clear width of 80 cm
  • The lift control buttons are in the range 90 cm to 115 cm from floor level
  • The lift control buttons are tactile but do not have Braille
  • The lift car has rails on the left as you enter, and on the end wall in front of you
  • There is a visual indicator and a voice announcement of the floor
  • The lift is well lit
  • The floor surface is carpet
  • There is no mirror in the lift

There is a main central staircase connecting all floors of the building. This staircase has continuous handrails both sides, although only to the right (ascending) around landings. The stairs have high contrast edges. 

There are secondary staircases at each end of the building. The stairs have continuous handrails both side and high contrast edges.

The double entrance doors are manual and heavy to use. Each leaf has a clear width of only 55 cm. There is an intercom to reception which can be used for visitors who require assistance to open the doors. 

Most single leaf doors have a clear width of between 73 cm and 78 cm and are heavy (the recommended clear width is 80cm). The accessible toilet doors have a clear width of at least 80 cm and are light. 

Most double doors have a single leaf clear width of approximately 60 cm including doors into the seminar room and lecture theatre. Both leaves can be held open if needed. Most of these doors are medium or heavy to use. 

Most corridor doors are held open with a clear width of over 100 cm. 

There is a mixture of full height, and standing height vision panels in doors.

The lecture theatre is on the ground floor and is located off the central stair and lift lobby area. 

There are heavy double doors into a small lobby with each leaf having a clear width of only 60 cm. However, both door leaves can be held open to give a clear width of 120 cm. There are further heavy double doors from the lobby into the lecture theatre with the same dimensions. They can also be held open. 

There is step free access to a level area with designated wheelchair spaces at either end. There is ramped access to the stage. There is tiered seating with stepped access only between each level. The steps to the left side of the lecture theatre (as you are facing the stage) have a continuous handrail to the left. The other steps do not have handrails. All steps have contrasting markings on the step edges. 

There is an infrared hearing support system installed in the lecture theatre. The department will provide headsets with either earbuds or a neckloop.

The seminar room is on the ground floor and is located off the central stair and lift lobby area. 

There are heavy double doors with each leaf having a clear width of only 62 cm. Both leaves can be held open to give a clear width of 124 cm. 

There are freestanding tables and chairs which can be rearranged as needed. 

There is an infrared hearing support system installed in the lecture theatre. The department will provide headsets with either earbuds or a neckloop.

There are many laboratories throughout the building. Doors into the labs generally have a clear width of  between 73 cm and 78 cm. Space in the labs is tight and there is not a lot of circulation space. There are no height adjustable lab benches.

The cafe is on the third floor and is located off the central stair and lift lobby area. 

There are two sets of double doors leading into the common room which are usually held open; both have a clear width of over 100 cm. 

There is a food service counter at a height of 92 cm with no knee recess. There is also self service cold food. 

Seating is a mixture of tables and chairs and sofas and low tables. This is a spacious room with plenty of circulation space between tables and chairs.
