Cairns Library - (1 of 1)

The library is on the first floor of the Academic Centre and can be reached by lift or stairs. The library is all on one level with step free access throughout. There is a wheelchair accessible toilet located near the library on the same floor. There is a portable loop available at the enquiries desk.

There are disabled bays throughout the hospital site; the most useful bays are located near the entrance to the academic centre (blue badge)

The parking is complex around the site as there are some blue badge bays that are free to use, whereas other disabled parking is chargeable. Please study the link below carefully:

The easiest way to get to the Cairns Library is via the academic centre:

Pass through the automatic doors, in front of you is a lift and stairs, go up one floor and exit left.

Follow the long corridor until you reach a corner.  In front of you are two large doors with a circular window - this is the entrance to the library.

There is a reception desk and two additional doors, one for entry and one for exit.  

They are swipe card controlled although the staff can open them if you have trouble reaching or your card is not registered.

The Cairns Library has two reception areas, one in the lobby area and another inside the library.

Both counters are lowered and staffed.

There are hearing loops at both.

There is an accessible toilet on same floor within George Pickering Education Centre (down the long corridor).

Another is located on the ground floor (see floor plan). 

As you face the lift turn left and head through the double doors towards the lecture theatre.  

The toilet is situated on the right hand side.

There is a lift located in the academic centre.

There are additional lifts located in the main building if this one is out of order.

The Cairns Library is located on the 2nd floor of the Academic Centre.

The library itself has no stairs as it is all on one level. 

The stairs in the academic centre have railings on both sides and a contrast strip on each step.

The main doors (into the library space) are on a swipe card but not powered to open.  There are staff nearby to assist if need be.

There a very few doors in the library and all are glazed or have glazed panels.

There are two main reading rooms.  The first is very open plan and contains shelving, cubicles and open plan seating and workstations.

The second is a smaller library containing shelving and some desk space.

There is a small seminar room located at the end of a corridor at the rear of the library. There is a hearing loop located here.

There is small break out space located just by the main reception desk in the lobby area in front of the library entrance.

The library doesn’t have a café but there are several cafés throughout the hospital site.

There is a portable hearing loop, which can be collected from the enquiries desk.

The library can provide the following assistive equipment:

  • Five coloured acetate sheets
  • Two hand-held magnifiers 
  • Two daylight reading lamps

Please ask at the Issue Desk if you wish to use any of this equipment. 

In addition there are three height adjustable desks and one ergonomic chair.
